About Us

Natural Resin is a renewable resource derived from pine forests, predominantly located in the Central and Northern regions of Portugal. This “bio” raw material has the potential to replace fossil-based resins across various industries, including the Food, Textile, and Footwear industries.

To drive the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy, the RN21 Consortium – Innovation in the Natural Resin Industry was created. It consists of 22 key measures and brings together companies and entities from across the entire Natural Resin value chain in Portugal.

The objective of this Integrated Project is to elevate the value of Natural Resin as a bio-based and renewable product, expanding its industrial applications and exploring its economic potential in a sustainable manner. This process includes research, development, and innovation aimed at creating new products and markets for Natural Resin. Additionally, the project seeks to modernize and make the entire value chain more efficient and sustainable, optimizing extraction, production, and commercialization processes. It also aims for the ecological and digital transition of the sector, promoting collaboration and integration among different stakeholders to foster innovation, share knowledge, and create an environment conducive to the growth and strengthening of the Natural Resin sector in Portugal.

General Objectives

The RN21 Integrated Consortium is guided by three main principles:

  1. Cover the entire Natural Resin value chain, from the forest to the final consumer, with a focus on markets and new products derived from Natural Resin.
  2. Address the key needs and opportunities identified by sector stakeholders.
  3. Contribute to the objectives of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), particularly in the sustainable bioeconomy component.

(OG1) Contribute to economic resilience and promote the sustainable bioeconomy in Portugal by revitalizing the Natural Resin industry. The Consortium will support companies in diversifying their Natural Resin-derived products into higher-value bio-based products, modernizing production processes to incorporate new technologies, and adopting Circular Economy principles.

(OG2) Contribute to carbon neutrality and enhance the productivity and resilience of Portuguese forests through genetic improvement and advancements in resin extraction techniques, aiming to increase the production and value of Natural Resin as a forestry product.

(OG3) Promote territorial cohesion, particularly in the Central and Northern regions of the country, where the main resinous pine forests and the majority of sector companies are concentrated.

(OG4) Strengthen science and technology through Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) activities in collaboration with companies, higher education institutions, and regional entities.

Specific Objectives

These objectives will be achieved through the implementation of 22 key measures that will result in products, projects, and services based on research and knowledge for Natural Resin producers, processing industries, and the market. The key measures included in RN21 are aligned with those outlined in the Invitation to Create Consortiums. In some cases, these measures have been adapted to align with the strategic investments of the companies within the consortium while safeguarding confidentiality and their individual competitive positions in the market.

The specific objectives are organized into three pillars as set out in the Invitation to Create Consortiums:

I – Promotion of national Natural Resin production:

  1. Reinforce the productive capacity of pine forests.
  2. Increase resin productivity.
  3. Make resin production more attractive to forest owners.

II – Strengthening the sustainability of the manufacturing industry:

  1. Support industrial investment and the value chain.
  2. Develop new applications and strengthen markets.

III – Positive differentiation of Natural Resin and derived products:

  1. Create a certification seal and promote technical knowledge across the entire value chain.
  2. Enhance communication and marketing efforts.

Financing

The Integrated Project RN21 – Innovation in the Natural Resin Industry to Strengthen the National Bioeconomy is co-financed by the Environmental Fund through Component 12 – Promotion of the Sustainable Bioeconomy (Investment TC-C12-i01 – Sustainable Bioeconomy No. 02/C12-i01/202), using European funds allocated to Portugal by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). This funding is provided within the framework of the European Union’s (EU) Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR), as part of the Next Generation EU initiative, for the period 2021–2026.
