Isna, Oleiros, 22 November 2023 (Municipality of Oleiros) – The Municipality of Oleiros released the results of the first phase of the resin tapping trials in a pine stand in Isna, which exceeded expectations.

Two kilos of resin per pine

In the campaign that ran from April to early November, each of the 60 maritime pines tapped using traditional methods produced around two kilos of resin, above the national average of roughly one and a half kilos per tap in the first year. The figures were provided by Marco Ribeiro, president of Resipinus and head of Raízes In.

What comes next

In the second campaign, starting in March 2024, traditional tapping will continue on the same 60 pines, with production expected to rise by 30 to 40%. A new trial on another 60 pines in Isna will test a closed collection system and biological stimulants. For Miguel Marques, Mayor of Oleiros, the results confirm the potential of the municipality’s pine forest and open up an opportunity for the forest to generate income again.

Besides Isna, trials are under way in pine stands in Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Nazaré, Cantanhede and Amareleja, within the RN21 Integrated Project – Innovation in the Natural Resin Value Chain to Strengthen the National Bioeconomy, funded by the PRR – Component 12 – Promotion of the Sustainable Bioeconomy, and co-financed by the Environmental Fund.
