4 June 2025 (Centro PINUS) – Centro PINUS presented the maritime pine genetic improvement programme developed under the RN21 Integrated Project, which aims to make resin tapping more efficient, innovative and attractive for pine forest management.

A trial to measure genetic gain

Since 2024, a clonal trial has been established on a six-hectare plantation in the Alva de Pataias Forest Perimeter, on land provided by ICNF. The material comes from more than 400 trees selected by an ESAC team across several provenance regions, whose DNA was analysed by researchers from UTAD.

Researcher Isabel Carrasquinho, from INIAV, explains that cloning will make it possible to test the trees’ performance under controlled conditions and assess the genetic gain in resin production.
