23 October 2024 (tempo.pt) – tempo.pt published an article on the new Natural Resin applications presented at the second workshop of the RN21 Integrated Project in Cantanhede, explaining what this raw material is and how it is transforming several industries.
A resource from the Portuguese pine forest
Resin is a substance secreted by trees to protect themselves when their trunk or branches are damaged. In Portugal, the most commercially relevant species are maritime pine and stone pine, especially the former, and the main producing regions are the Central Coast and the inland North and Centre.
From food packaging to footwear
The article highlights TECMEAT’s project, which uses rosin to develop biodegradable packaging and protective films that help preserve food, as well as the work presented by SIMOLDES, TINTEX and CTCP in the automotive, textile and footwear sectors.
Coordinated by CoLAB ForestWISE, RN21 brings together 37 entities from the value chain, including first- and second-processing companies, scientific organisations and sector associations, to revitalise the entire Natural Resin value chain.
