14 August 2024 (Renováveis Magazine) – Renováveis Magazine presented the work of INEGI, a partner in the RN21 Integrated Project, to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in the Natural Resin processing industry.
Six measures to cut the energy footprint
At the sector’s request, the INEGI team proposed six measures to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. According to Francisco Lázaro, INEGI’s project lead, waste heat recovery and the integration of renewable sources could reduce energy consumption by around 25 to 30%, while electrification with industrial heat pumps could cut it by around 28%, with climate benefits depending on electricity from renewable sources.
Thermal insulation, easy to install with a quick payback, and the energy use of by-products, which reduces natural gas consumption without major investment, complete the set of solutions, alongside the retrofitting of equipment and processes.
A central role in Pillar II
Within RN21, INEGI coordinates the working group on efficient water and energy use and leads the sector’s transition to renewable energy, one of the measures under the pillar dedicated to strengthening the sustainability of the processing industry.
