7 July 2026 (Agroportal) – Agroportal reported on the results achieved by CeNTI under the RN21 Integrated Project, which are bringing rosin derivatives, a component of pine resin, into new applications in food packaging, textiles, footwear and the automotive sector.

Functional packaging

Rosin derivatives were used in gas-barrier coatings for biodegradable packaging, validated for vacuum-packed meat, and in encapsulation systems with antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.

Textiles, footwear and automotive

In textiles, the derivatives are added to fibres, knits and finishes to improve durability; in footwear, to soles and adhesives to strengthen mechanical performance; in car interiors, they replace up to 30% of synthetic resins in injection-moulded biopolymer parts. According to Lorena Coelho, the project’s lead researcher at CeNTI, the derivatives were adapted to each application, “ensuring equivalent or superior performance”.
