23 June 2025 (Agroportal) – Agroportal published INIAV’s presentation of measure I1.M1 of the RN21 Integrated Project, the “Genetic improvement programme for resin tapping”, which seeks to increase the productive capacity of pine forests.

Selecting the most productive trees

The project is based on the genetic selection of maritime pine “plus” trees (Pinus pinaster Ait.) with high resin yields, the establishment of clonal orchards producing forest reproductive material and the creation of an assisted selection platform.

A trial with 420 trees

In the Alva de Pataias Forest Perimeter, managed by ICNF, a trial is being established representing around 420 trees identified across the seven maritime pine provenance regions, reproduced by grafting since 2024. The best-performing genotypes will then be propagated in seed orchards to produce material of higher genetic quality.
